Date of establishment and the aims and Objectives of the Institution :
Date of Establishment (DOE) – 21.04.1980.
The Cancer Hospital, Agartala was established in the year 1980 with OPD service only to cater to the cancer patients of Tripura state. In 1979 the then Chief Minister Sri Nripen Chakraborty wrote to Central Health Minister about the need of Cobalt Therapy Unit for the State of Tripura. Accordingly, the Govt. of India vide letter No.F.,20013/9/80-R dated 2.2.81 accorded sanction of Rs. 10 lakhs for installation of Cobalt Therapy Unit at Cancer Hospital, Agartala. After necessary installation and training of required personnel the unit started delivering radiotherapy to patients from 1985. In the same year IPD facility started with 50 ( fifty )bed capacity. The hospital was recognized as Regional Cancer Centre by the MoHFW in March, 2008 vide letter No.F.No.T.20015/8/2007-R dated 24.3.2008.
Aims & Objectives of Regional Cancer Centre, Agartala are to provide treatment to cancer patients of the whole of the State of Tripura, undertake prevention, early detection and awareness generation. RCC, Agartala is also responsible to measure the burden of disease, pattern of cancer throughout the state and to provide palliative care both in hospital and at home of the bed ridden patients. As an associate hospital of Agartala Govt. Medical College (AGMC) RCC, Agartala is also responsible for training, education and research activities in the field of cancer in the state.
RCC Agartala is a government hospital located on 3.5 acres of government land which is adjacent and in continuation with the land of Agartala Government Medical college campus. It houses existing 3 storied building of plinth area 1450 sqm. Another building with 7 stories (B+G+5) and 850 sqm plinth area has been approved for construction by the Govt. of Tripura at the cost of Rs. 40.00 crores vide letter No.F.3(4-29)-PLAN/DHS/2012-13/3014-06/10782 (V-III) dt. 1.3.2014. The centre is left with around 1.5 acre land where it is proposed to construct the buildings for LINAC, PET, CT & MRI under the current proposal. The site approval for LINAC has already been obtained from AERB.
The Governing Body for RCC Agartala was constituted by the Governor of Tripura vide notification No F.3(162)-CH/MS/PROG/2008/1152-60 dt 15-4-2008.
