Directorate of Medical Education

 

Creation of Directorate of Medical Education (DME): Notification /Purpose/Justification and Function. The Directorate of Medical Education was established in the year 2011 as a separate Directorate under the control of Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tripura and started functioning w.e.f 15th October 2011 vide notification No.F.1(976)-MS/GS/2011/7441 (V-I), Dated, 17th October, 2011. As per the Notification the Directorate of Medical Education will be looking after all matters relating to Medical Education and related aspects as assigned by the Department from time to time.

                       As per order of the Government of Tripura vide No. F.3(406)/HFW/2005, Dated 21/12/2011, the Directorate of Medical Education is dealing with all matters relating to Medical Education, like Medical Colleges, Regional Pharmacy Colleges, Nursing Colleges in Government and Private Sector, Nursing Education, Paramedical Education, etc. As per the same order Principal of the respective Medical/Pharmacy/Nursing/Paramedical Institute shall send all medical education related papers/ files to the Director of Medical Education for disposal of the matter.

  1.  Assignments: -The Directorate of Medical Education, Govt. of Tripura looks after the task of generating human resources like Doctors, Nurses, Technicians, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists and other Health Personnel to meet the growing needs of not only the state but the entire North East to impart and ensure quality Medical Education and training in Health Care & encourage Research on various health issues to Undergraduate and Post Graduate students through Medical Colleges and Teaching Hospitals, Paramedical, Pharmacy and Nursing Institutions of one State.
  2. The Directorate of Medical Education is looking after a number of Colleges and Institutions as are under its academic control and Counselling of seats available in those Colleges/Institutions for admission in various courses.

 

  1. Counselling for UG(MBBS/BDS/BAMS/BHMS/BASLP) Courses, PG Courses (MD/MS/MDS), Pharmacy Courses, Paramedical Courses and Nursing Courses: As a designated authority, Directorate of Medical Education has to arrange for Counselling every year for admission to Under Graduate (MBBS /BDS/ BAMS/ BHMS/ BASLP) Courses, Post Graduate Courses (MD/MS/MDS), PG Diploma (CPS) Courses, Pharmacy Courses, Paramedical Courses and Nursing Courses in the State and outside the State. After Counselling being conducted by the Counselling Committee, the Directorate of Medical Education to arrange necessary nomination for the selected candidates for the selected courses.

About Department & Directorate:

With a view to separate the medical education chapter from the Directorate of Health Services, this directorate was bifurcated and a new directorate namely Directorate of Medical Education was set up.  This Directorate (Directorate of Medical Education) started functioning w.e.f. 15.10.2011 and was accommodated in the 2nd floor of Tripura State AIDS Control Society building located opposite to IGM Hospital (old gate).  This directorate was later shifted to the 2nd floor of Dr.P.B. Das Memorial Diagnostic Center at Bidurkarta Chowmuhani, Agartala.

Who is Who

Prof. (Dr.) H.P Sarma is the Director of Medical Education , Dr. Debal Das, DDO, O/o the DME, Dr. Debajyoti Saha ,SPIO, Branch Officer Paramedical & Training and N.O TBJEE, Dr. Lipika Das,OSD, Medical Officer (Dental) & Branch Officer (Nursing), O/o the DME, Dr.Priya Jyoti Chakma is the OSD, O/o the DME, Dr. Anupam Datta is the Convenor Counselling & OSD in the Directorate of Medical Education.

 

Organizational Set up

This new directorate is under the administrative control of the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Tripura headed by the Secretary to the Govt. of Tripura, Health & Family Welfare Department. Prof. Dr. H.P Sarma is the Director and Head of this Directorate.  There are many Medical, Pharmacy, Para-Medical and Nursing Colleges/Institutions both in public and private sector in the State which are under supervision of this Directorate.

Medical Colleges

  • Agartala Govt. Medical College with GBP Hospital as its teaching Hospital, Agartala and is imparting both Under Graduate (MBBS) and Post Graduate (MD/MS) Courses in various Disciplines (Government Institution)
  • Tripura Medical College with Dr. BRAM Teaching Hospital as its teaching Hospital, Hapania, West Tripura and is imparting both Under Graduate (MBBS) and Post Graduate (MD/MS) Courses in various Disciplines (Run by a Society)
  • Agartala Govt. Dental College & IGM Hospital increased BDS seats up to 50 to 63 (13 seats increase under EWS category) from the session 2025-26.
  • Tripura Santi Niketan Medical College with 150 intake capacity for the academic session 2024-25.

   Pharmacy Institutes

  • Regional Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (RIPSAT), Abhoynagar, Agartala and is imparting both Degree & Diploma courses in Pharmacy (Government Institution). Total intake capacity 146.
  • Bharat Pharmaceutical Technology, Amtali and is imparting both Degree and Diploma courses in Pharmacy (Private run) with intake capacity B. Pharm-60 seats, D. Pharm-60 seats.
  • Milestone Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences Udaipur, Jagannath Bari Road is imparting both Degree and Diploma Course with intake capacity B. Pharm-60 and D. Pharm-60 seats.
  • Birbirkram Pharmacy College, Khayerpur is imparting both Degree and Diploma Courses with intake capacity B. Pharm-60 and D. Pharm-60 seats.
  • Dharma Dipa University is started Pharmaceutical Course at Sabroom, Manu Bankul, B.Pharm Course with intake capacity 60.

Para-Medical Institution

  • Tripura   Institute of Para-Medical Sciences, Hapania is imparting various Para-Medical Graduate courses.  35% of the available seats in each course is reserved for the State Govt (PPP Model Institute).
  • Bhavans Tripura College of Science & Technology.

Name of the Government Nursing Institute/College:

  • Agartala Govt. Nursing College running B.Sc Nursing with intake capacity 50 seats.
  • Dr. BRAM Nursing School is also imparting GNM course with intake capacity 50 per year for male students only, located at IGM Hospital complex, Agartala (Government Institute).
  • ANM Training Institute for female candidates at Palace Compound, Agartala, West District imparting ANM course with intake capacity 60 per year.
  • GNM training Institute Udaipur, Gomati with intake capacity 40 per year from the academic year 2023-24.
  • ANM Training Institute for female candidates at Shantirbazar District Hospital complex, South District imparting ANM course with intake capacity 30 per year.

  • Tripura College of Nursing, located in the Tripura Medical College complex at Hapania under which the Tripura is imparting B.Sc. Nursing course with intake capacity 60 and M.Sc Nursing course with intake capacity 10 per year.
  • The Institute of Nursing Science at Durjoynagar is imparting M.Sc Nursing (12 seats), Post Basis B.Sc (Nursing) (30 seats), Post basic B.Sc Nursing course (50 seats) and GNM course (30 seats).
  • School and College of Nursing, Amtali under TIPS imparting ANM (60 seats), B.Sc Nursing (60 seats) and M.Sc Nursing course (25 seats), GNM-40 seats. 35% of the available seats in each course are reserved for the State Govt (PPP Model)
  • Tripura Sundari College of Nursing, Tulakona, Champamura imparting GNM Nursing course with intake capacity 40 per year and B.Sc Nursing-40 seats.
  • The ILS Nursing Institute, Kunjaban, Agartala is imparting GNM Course (50 seats), B.Sc Nursing (50 seats) and post basic nursing course with intake capacity 30 per year.
  • North East Institute of Nursing Science, Dimsagar, Agartala imparting GNM course (30 nos), ANM Course (30 seats) and B.Sc Nursing course with intake capacity 40 per year.
  • ICFAI Institute of Nursing Science, Kamalghat, imparting ANM Course with intake capacity 40 and GNM course with intake capacity 50 per year.

Achievement for the year 2025-26: - (up to 30th September, 2025)

AGMC:

  1. 01 (One) basic teacher and 03 (three) Assistant Professor is promoted to immediate higher post as Ad-hoc basis at AGMC.
  2. 08 (eight) Associate Professor, 06 (six) Assistant Professor, 12 (twelve) nos Basic teacher is redesignated to immediate higher post in different discipline at AGMC.
  3. UG seats increased 150 at AGMC for the Academic year 2024-25.
  4. 04 PG seats increased in Obs & Gynae Department for the year 2024-25 at AGMC. Total PG seats increased at AGMC up to 89.
  5. 03 PG seats introduced in Radiotherapy Department at AGMC.
  6. 03 PG seats increased in Community Medicine at AGMC.
  7.  Organ transplantation at AGMC & GBP Hospital has already been started.
  8.  State Government has started process of signature of MoU with MOHAN foundation for Organ Transplantation.
  9. 32 Senior Resident (SR) of AGMC redesignated as Assistant Professor in different discipline.
  10. 08 (eight) Associate Professor redesignated to Professor in different discipline at AGMC.
  11. 06 (six) Assistant Professor redesignated to Associate Professor in different discipline at AGMC.

12.  02 (two) Associate Prof. (Super Specialty) recruited through TPSC at AGMC.

13.  09 Super Specialty services are already in function in AGMC viz. Cardiology, CTVS, Nephrology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, GI Surgery, Neurology and Gastroenterology.

  • 03 Professor, 02 SR and 06 JR appointed at Agartala Govt. Dental College on contract basis.
  • TPSC has concurred the absorption of 15 Medical Officer from THS to TMES (in AGMC).
  • TPSC has concurred 03 Assistant Professor to Associate Professor at AGMC.
  • Advertisement and scrutiny completed by TPSC to recruit one gastroenterologist at AGMC.
  • Draft Tripura Nursing Education Service Rule is prepared and placed to the Law Department.
  • Nurses Training Institute (GNM School), Agartala is upgraded into Agartala Govt. Nursing College during the academic session 2023-24 of 50 intake capacity for B.Sc Nursing (girls).
  • ANM (R) Training Institute, Udaipur is up-graded into GNM training Institute, Udaipur, Gomati, Tripura during the academic session 2023-24of 40 intake capacities for GNM courses (girls).

 Achievements for the year 2022-23.

1) AGMC & GBP Hospital, Agartala, Tripura: -   06 (six) Super Specialty services are already in function at AGMC viz. Cardiology, CTVS, Nephrology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery. 06 (Six) Assistant Professor has been appointed through Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) in Super specialty Departments like Neurology, Nephrology, Cardiology, Urology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery Department.


2. Agartala Govt. Dental College (AGDC): - DCI has given permission to admission 50 students in BDS Course for 2nd batch.


3. PHARMACY College: -

•    New Pharmacy College started at Udaipur, Jagannath Bari Road namely Milestone Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

•    M.Pharm courses have been introduced and started with 6 seats at RIPSAT.


Achievements during the year 2021-2022: -

  1. Agartala Government Medical College & GBP Hospital: -
  • All eligible faculties of AGMC have given full duty charge. 22 Associate Professors have given FDC as Professor. 35 Assistant Professors have given FDC as Associate Professor. 24 Basic teachers given FDC as Assistant Professors.
  • 18 Associate Professor promoted to Professor, 34 Assistant Professor promoted to Associate Professor, 15 Basic Teachers (SRs/Tutors/Registrars) promoted to Asst Prof. On Ad-hoc Promotion.
  • 7th UGC pay scale given to all faculties of AGMC.
  • 7th AICTE pay scale given to all faculties of RIPSAT.
  • New Principal AGMC appointed.
  • All Rounds of Counselling of UG (MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BASLP), PG(MD/MS/CPS), 6 months USG Course under PCPNDT Act and Nursing for admission in various courses conducted successfully.
  • Various categories of staff of Regional Geriatric Centre (RGC) under the National Programme for Health care of Elderly (NPHCE) of AGMC and GBP Hospital have joined.
  • 1st year MBBS classes (offline) along with foundation courses started in both AGMC and TMC from 01-02-2021.
  • New Labour Room Complex inaugurated on 05-02-2021.
  • 02 (two) new Oxygen plants installed of capacity 1000 LPM and 900 LPM.
  • CTVS services started from July 2021-22.
  • Dead body carrying vehicle and good carrying vehicle procured. 
  1. Tripura Medical College: -Operation Smile’ conducted in TMC from 23rd to 26th January 2021. Total - 39 nos. operated. Cleft Lip operation conducted: 13 nos and Cleft Palate operations conducted: 26 nos.
  2. Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH): - 20 seats of Post MBBS NBEMS Diploma Courses at IGM Hospital have been approved against 4 disciplines under National Board of Examination, New Delhi. Out of these 4 seats in Paediatric, 6 seats in Obst. and Gyneacology, 4 seats in Ophthalmology and 6 seats in Family Medicine out of which 10 seats (50%) are State Quota seats for Tripura State Govt. In service Doctors.
  3.  RIPSAT: -
  • PCI and AICTE has approved for starting 15 seats for M. Pharm Course started in RIPSAT, in 6 seats after getting PCI and AICTE approved.
  • RIPSAT faculty have started getting 7th Pay Commission AICTE pay scale from April 2021.
  • Repairing of internal roads started.
  • New Iron removal plant installed.
  • Approval has been received from Department of Science and technology, Government of India to conduct Research Programme in development of Phytomedicine from medicinal plants of Tripura in RIPSAT.
  • Repair of approach Road in RIPSAT done.

 

5. Nursing: -
• 147number of seats have been increased in Nursing Courses in various Nursing Institute of Tripura, ILS-50 BSc Nursing seats, TIPS-25 MSc. seats, Sarvodaya-60 GNM seats, TLN-12 MSc Nursing seats started/increased.
•NOC issued to the ILS Nursing institute for introduction of BSc. Nursing programmed for the academic year 2021-2022.

 

Achievement during the year 2020-21: -

1. Agartala Government Medical College & GBP Hospital:-

•16 numbers of Post graduate seats have been increased from 63 Post graduate seats to 79 Post graduate seats at Agartala Govt.

• Medical College Amongst these 50% seats are for State Quota and 50% for All India Quota.

• RTPCR- Total Tested- 214483, Total Positive-6229.

• Major Surgery -5246, Minor Surgery -3194, Normal Delivery-1658, Caesarean Section-2405, Uro-Surgery-1556, Plastic Surgery-779, Neurosurgery-1230, Telemedicine-200, Histopathology-2030,Dialysis-13268, DOTS-176, Post Mortem-1100, Indoor pt. (New)-41741, Indoor pt. (old)- 169034, Outdoor pt. (New)-101300, Outdoor pt. (old)-61943, X-Ray-30393, USG-11139, CT Scan-11803, MRI-1938, Echocardiography-553, Endoscopy-269, ECG-8118, Blood Trans-11220.

• Installation and Operationalization of 20 KL Cryogenic Oxygen tank-based plant at AGMC installed commissioned and operational since Nov. 2021.

• Installation of 02 (two) PSA Oxygen Generation plants of 1000 LPM and 900 LPM for Jayanti Block and NTH-1 of AGMC and GBP Hospital installed, commissioned and operational since October 2021.

• Up gradation of the BSL-2 Lab of VRDL to BSL-3 level-supply order issued.


2. Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH):-

• 20 numbers of seats have been sanctioned against 4 numbers of disciplines at IGM Hospital under National Board of Examination, New Delhi. Out of these, 4 (four) number of seats in Paediatrics, 4 (four) number of seats in Ophthalmology, 6 (six) number of seats in Family Medicine and 6 (six) number of seats in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 50% of seats are reserved for State Domicile.

•    20 seats Post MBBS NBEMS Diploma Courses at IGM Hospital against 4 disciplines under National Board of Examination, New Delhi. Out of these 4 seats in Paediatric, 6 seats in Obst. and Gyneacology, 4 seats in Ophthalmology and 6 seats in Family Medicine out of which 10 seats (50%) are State Quota seats for Tripura State Government in service Doctors.


3. Pharmacist College

  1. RIPSAT: -
  • Total 90 numbers of seats have been increased in RIPSAT.
  • 30 (thirty) seats have been increased in B.Pharm RIPSAT.
  • 40 (fourty) seats have been started in B.Pharm Practice Course in RIPSAT.
  • PCI and AICTE has approved for starting 15(fifteen) seats for M.Pharm Course in RIPSAT.
  1. Bharat Pharmaceutical Technology: -
  • One new Pharmacy Institute (Bharat Pharmaceutical Technology) has been established in Amtali.
  • 60 (sixty) seats in D. Pharm Course.
  • 60 (sixty) seats in B. Pharm Course.

 4. Nursing: -

  • 04 (four) nos. of new Nursing Training Institute have been established.
  • 265 numbers of seats have been increased in Nursing Courses in various Nursing Institutes of Tripura.
  • Newly constructed NTI building handed over to the Director of Medical Education. GNM training course is going on there and 150 bedded hostel facilities are also available for student (Boys only).
